Over the past 20 years, I’ve cultivated a morning self-care practice that keeps me grounded, centered, and open to inspiration - especially in seasons when life feels full, uncertain, or stretched.
It’s less about discipline, and more about devotion.
A quiet returning to myself… before the world asks anything of me.
Most mornings begin simply.
After brushing my teeth and brewing a cup of tea, I make my way to my office or studio and begin with Morning Pages, a journaling practice from "The Artist’s Way" by Julia Cameron.
It’s a gentle brain dump…
a clearing of mental clutter…
a way to empty the noise so something deeper can be heard.
If you’ve ever sat down to create and felt overwhelmed by your own thoughts… this is where I begin.
From there, I move into my body.
I roll out my yoga mat and stretch - sometimes in silence, sometimes with soft music, and often with a guided meditation. I especially enjoy listening to Esther Hicks, whose affirmations help me shift into a more expansive, receptive state.
After clearing my mind and nourishing it with something uplifting, I settle into stillness.
This is where the magic happens.
My meditation practice is simple. Eyes closed. Body relaxed. Hands resting gently in my lap.
Rather than trying to silence my thoughts, I give my mind something soft to hold… a mantra or affirmation - something simple and steady to return to when my attention drifts.
Love.
Peace.
All is well.
Sometimes I focus my awareness gently toward the tip of my nose. Sometimes I simply rest in the rhythm of my breath.
And sometimes… I begin to see colors swirling behind my closed eyes - like creativity itself, quietly waking up.
Most days, this practice takes about 45 minutes: 15 minutes journaling, 15 minutes stretching, 15 minutes in stillness.
But it doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
Even 5 minutes can bring you back to yourself.
Whether through journaling, movement, meditation - or simply a quiet moment with your morning tea…
I believe in creating space to root before we rise.
Because from a grounded, centered place…
we don’t just make art.
We meet life differently.
And sometimes…
that is where everything begins.
